Premier League Derby Clash
Another weekend, and it’s another massive Premier League derby. After the Manchester clubs clashed last Sunday, it’s north London’s turn on March 14th as Arsenal host Tottenham at the Emirates Stadium.
It might feel like there’s a London derby every weekend, but this is the big one. Arsenal are far from European contention, and Spurs are only outsiders for a top-four berth, yet this is unquestionably the weekend’s headline fixture. Defeat will heap pressure on either manager.
An uptick in performances and results has seen Spurs widen the gap to their north London rivals. Ahead of this massive Premier League derby, Arsenal are seven points behind Spurs. The Lilywhites could be as high as fifth by the end of the weekend if other results go their way.
Spurs’ Recent Success
Another weekend, and it’s another massive Premier League derby. After Tottenham come into this match in form. It’s five straight wins in all competitions for Jose Mourinho’s side. They also have a brilliant recent record on derby day, going unbeaten over the last five and getting the better of the Gunners in both 2020 meetings.
Harry Kane has been Arsenal’s tormentor-in-chief over the last few years. Kane is having yet another wonderful season. An icepack on his knee as Spurs won in the Europa League on Thursday night has left Spurs fans panicking about his availability for Sunday’s Premier League derby, however. Kane is the top scorer in the history of this fixture with 11 goals.
Even if Kane is available, Mourinho has some interesting selection decisions. Mourinho opted for a front four of Kane, Heung-Min Son, Gareth Bale and Lucas Moura in the Premier League derby win over Crystal Palace last weekend.
Tanguy Ndombele got the start in midweek, however, and could return to the Premier League XI as Spurs look to break down a solid Arsenal backline. The Gunners rank fourth in expected goals against this term.
Arsenal Find Attacking Fluency
Goals were the problem in the opening months of 2020/21. The attack lacked guile and cutting edge early in the season, but Mikel Arteta has altered the line-up and struck a more creative formula. Arsenal ranks fourth in expected goals since the turn of the year.
A combination of Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe has rejuvenated Arsenal in possession. They’ve scored 10 goals over their last four matches, and the struggles of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have faded into the past. Aubameyang has eight goals in his last seven starts – only 10 Premier League players have scored more in the league this season.
There are signs of hope for Arsenal fans. Arteta has a full squad to choose from on Sunday. Their recent attacking displays suggest they can create chances against this Spurs defence, and they will need to make plenty with how potent Spurs’ attack can be.
Spurs’ match to lose
Past results don’t necessarily tell us much about upcoming matches. Arsenal has lost just two of their last 26 home matches against Spurs. The visitors are naturally favoured for this Premier League derby, however.
The fitness of Kane is clearly a huge factor here. Kane is the focal point of everything Spurs do in attack, and he’s got a knack for starring on occasions like this. Arsenal’s chances of Premier League derby success wane drastically if Kane starts.
Neither of these teams are reliable this season. Both are capable of nightmare-inducing performances. With Mourinho and Arteta, it’s unlikely to be a goal-fest like previous north London derbies, but with the attacking talent on show, anything is possible.
Arsenal vs Tottenham Prediction
Arsenal chances of a European position in the league is doubtful with inconsistent performances. Tottenham have been on fire the last few games, but under par away from home. Saying that the spurs front line of Son Heung-Min, Bale and Kane maybe just too much for Arsenal to handle. so we have this as a Tottenham Win.
