Learning Basic Blackjack Rules
If you’re entirely new to the game, there’s no need to worry as it’s one of the easiest to pick up when it comes to Blackjack rules.
How to Win
Each card is worth a certain number of points, and the aim is to beat the dealer’s hand. Many people say that you need to get a hand totalling as close to twenty-one as possible without “going bust” (i.e. going over twenty-one). However, you can still beat the dealer with a lower number of points provided that your hand is worth more points than theirs, or they go over twenty-one.
As there are many different versions of the game, the number of decks that are used can vary between one and eight.
Points
The Jack, Queen, and Queen referring to as ‘face cards’, and they are worth ten points each as is the 10. Cards 2 to 9 are worth their written values. For example, a 2 is worth two points, and a 9 is worth nine points. The Ace can contribute either one or eleven points depending on how many points you need for your final hand.
In Blackjack rules, the only hand that can beat a hand worth twenty-one points is an Ace and a 10 which is called a “Blackjack”.
Starting the Game
You start by placing a bet. Next, the dealer (which could be a live dealer or the computer software that replicates the role of the dealer) gives you two cards and himself two cards, one of which will be facing upwards.
If the dealer’s face-up card is an A, he may offer you what’s called “insurance” in blackjack rules. Insurance is a type of side bet that pays 2 to 1.
If the dealer has a blackjack, you lose your bet unless you also have one, although you will receive any insurance bet that is due.
The Moves
There are five main moves (or choices) that you can make during a game:
Stand – you pass and keep the cards that were originally dealt to you;
Hit – you draw one or more cards to add to your hand;
Double – you double your existing bet and draw another card;
Split – you double the size of your current bet and split any pair of cards of two cards worth ten points each into separate cards. The dealer then draws a second card for each new hand, at which point, you can choose from the four options above again;
Surrender – you resign your hand but get to keep half of your bet.
